The Tonewolf Story
My obsession with guitars started, like most I guess, when I was young.
I always seemed to listen to different music than most of my friends, and always heavily guitar based.
Growing up in the 1970's I was subconsciously programmed with the amazing music of the time.
It was in my mid-teens when it got really serious with the acquisition of my first proper Strat....black like David Gilmour's!
I spent the following years looking for "The One"...the guitar that connected with me perfectly.
This led me into buying, selling, upgrading and ultimately building my own.
It's now 25 years since I built my first guitar and many builds later I was given the nudge I was looking for to dedicate myself to turning this passion into a business.
How They're Built
Every Tonewolf guitar is built by hand in Great Denham, Bedfordshire. Steve Weir builds each instrument himself, applying over two decades of guitar-making experience to every joint, every fret, and every finish. The construction uses traditional methods throughout. Bodies are shaped from premium tonewoods, typically African Mahogany with Korina available as an upgrade. Necks are Brazilian Mahogany or quartersawn Maple, depending on the model and the player's preference.
The standard finish is nitrocellulose lacquer, applied and rubbed back by hand. It is more time-consuming than modern polyurethane finishes, but it breathes with the wood and ages beautifully. Steve also offers relic finishes for players who want that played-in look from day one. Fretboards are premium Rosewood or Ebony, dressed and crowned to exacting standards.
Electronics are carefully chosen. Sunbear Pickups are the standard fitment, wound specifically for each model's voicing. Wiring uses CTS pots, Switchcraft jacks, and Mullard Mustard capacitors with 50s-style wiring throughout. Hardware includes Kluson tuners and ABM Bell Brass bridges, selected for their contribution to sustain and resonance rather than just aesthetics.
What Sets Them Apart
Tonewolf guitars are vintage-inspired without being copies. The Cub takes subtle cues from 1950s single-pickup designs and strips everything back to the essentials: one P90, a wraparound bridge, and nothing else. It is deceptively simple and remarkably expressive. The Delta builds on that foundation with a dual-pickup configuration for more tonal range. The Theta is the most distinctive shape in the range, blending elements of the Firebird, Telecaster, and Explorer into an ergonomic hybrid that sounds like nothing else. The Alpha is the flagship, a premium build with the finest materials and appointments.
What ties them all together is Steve's focus on feel. These guitars are designed for players, not collectors. The neck profiles are comfortable for long sessions, the weight is carefully managed, and the setups are precise. Every Tonewolf ships in a protective case, ready to play. Customisation is central to the offering. Woods, pickups, finishes, bridges, neck profiles, and scale lengths can all be specified to suit the individual player's needs.
